It means mercy here too, but knowing that it also means 'womb' and how the scholars brought those two concepts together was like when the etymology of a word dawns on you. Deepened the word's meaning.

'Rahm' is a pretty common word in Hindi/Urdu. Did not know it means 'womb' in Arabic: it makes so much sense now. Very interesting connection. That Sufism also celebrates physical attributes came as a surprise to me. Wonderful essay, Yana.

Thank you, Malay! Yes, it was a surprise for me as well. Contrary to what is usually heard from practitioners of any spiritual path — physicality is shunned to some degree and much of the effort goes towards cultivating inner qualities (historically, many Sufis have done the same.)

And did not know this! What does "Rahm" mean in Hindi-Urdu?
